Only three times in the 24-year history of the men's basketball program has a true guard gone out and sizzled the nets at a better than .500 clip in any one season. Two of those performances came from the same hands, those of Dave Michaels. He became the first-ever Saint to connect at such a rate with his .507 mark during the 1977-78 campaign. One year later, his shooting eye was even sharper as evidenced by his .518 report. That leaves only one question. Could Michaels have performed the trifecta or stretched the run out to four straight seasons? Unfortunately that challenge could not have been answered. Michaels came to St. Francis after splitting his first two seasons of eligibility at nearby Lewis University and then Waubonsee College. Prior to that, he was an all-state performer at Aurora Central Catholic High School. Nonetheless, two years were better than none and, in the end, it was a good thing that he did emerge at St. Francis. After all, he wound up being the second-leading scorer during his initial campaign with his 11.7 scoring average. One year later, he moved up to the top spot on the statistical charts with a 15.4 average, which led to his being the unanimous choice for the team's Most Valuable Player award. At the same time, he picked up hardware as an all-conference and all-district honorable mention choice. Michaels shot .512 during his two-year stint as a Saint and averaged 13.7 points per game. A 1979 graduate of CSF with Summa Cum Laude honors, he earned a bachelor's degree in Law & Government.
