GREENWOOD, Ind. -- Three members of the University of St. Francis men's track & field program have garnered recognition as 2024-25 College Sports Communicators (CSC) NAIA Academic All-District selections. Announced as team selections for the first time in their careers were
Sam Mickelson,
Scott Tumilty and
Miguel Garcia.
The award recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the track and in the classroom. To be eligible, student-athletes must be at least a sophomore both athletically and academically and boast no less than a 3.50 cumulative grade point average, while performing at an elite athletic level. Academic All-District honorees are considered for advancement to the CSC Academic All-America ballot.
Mickelson closed out his career by securing a 16th-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Championships this past spring. He also was a two-time all-league selection after winning the same event and placing third overall in the 5,000-meter run at the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Outdoor Championships earlier this month.
Mickelson's other career accomplishments included acquiring all-conference honors as part of USF's cross country team that placed 21st at the NAIA Championships in 2023. He also qualified for the 2024 NAIA Indoor Championships in the 3,000-meter run as well as the 2025 NAIA Outdoor Championships in the steeplechase.
For his career, Mickelson was a three-time all-conference champion in track & field, winning the outdoor 3,000-meter steeplechase in both 2024 and 2025 as well as the 5,000-meter run in 2024. Altogether, he was named all-conference in track & field six times.
In total, Mickelson was a seven-time CCAC all-conference selection and three-time NAIA qualifier between cross country and track & field.
Mickelson, who graduated in May with his Master's in Business Management, was a one-time league all-academic choice in track & field. On the national level, he gained NAIA Scholar-Athlete distinction one time, as well. Along with those accolades, Mickelson was also a Dean's List honoree in all four of his semesters at USF.
Tumilty concluded his career as an all-conference selection in outdoor track & field. This past season, he secured all-league honors after placing third overall in the 100-meter dash.
Along with his accolades obtained as a six-year member of USF's football team, Tumilty was a six-time all-conference selection and two-time NAIA All-American between the two sports.
Named to the Dean's list in six of his ten semesters while completing his undergraduate degree in Accounting and Master's in Special Education, Tumilty was twice recognized as a NAIA Scholar-Athlete, once each in track & field and football. He earned a total of five conference all-academic plaudits in both sports (one in track & field, four in football), as well.
Garcia, a Psychology major, has earned Dean's List honors in three of his four semesters, thus far, at St. Francis. Like Mickelson, he has earned all-conference accolades in cross country once, having done so by securing a 13th-place finish at the CCAC Championships this past fall. Garcia's placement, which was just four seconds ahead of USF's next closest opponent, secured the Saints' sixth straight conference championship by the slimmest of margins, one point.
Garcia was also named as both a NAIA Scholar-Athlete and CCAC all-academic selection in both cross country and track & field for the first time this year.
The CSC Academic All-America program separately recognizes track & field honorees in four divisions – NCAA I, II and III and NAIA. Academic All-America honorees will be announced later this month.
