Baftiri, Corona Lead Saints To Second-Best Indoor Nationals Finish In Program History

BROOKINGS, S.D. --- Led by three NAIA All America performances from Sabrina Baftiri and a pair from Laisha Corona, the University of St. Francis women's track & field team totaled 21 points on championship Saturday to close out the three day NAIA Indoor Championships with a total of 26 points and a seventh place finish among 62 scoring teams. The placement was the second highest in school history, surpassed only by the program's fourth place standing in 2017.

Baftiri got the Saints off on the right foot with the first event of the day Saturday, placing fifth in the mile run with her time of 5:02.25. She added another six points a little over two hours later when she landed the third-best time in the 3,000 meter race (10:01.29).

USF just missed on three more individuals boosting the point total in the 5,000 meter run. The Saints settled for two with Corona and Daly Galloway garnering the all america recognition by placing among the top eight runners. Katherine Bakken was one spot back in ninth. Corona registered a time of 17:08.03 in placing third, while Galloway was eighth at 17:25.12. Bakken clocked in at 17:29.83.

St. Francis claimed its final points of the day in the distance medley relay, which was made up of Corona, Baftiri, Mara Brunoand Ana Mendoza Pineda. There, they notched four points with their fifth place finish (12:13.60).

Also competing on Saturday was Teghan Tillman, who placed 13th in the high jump with a mark of five feet, three inches.

Baftiri and Corona both closed out their indoor careers with three NAIA All America plaques over the three days. Pineda gained all america status twice with her efforts in both the 4x800 meter and distance medley relays, while Bruno, Allison Ramsey, Bailey Wilkand Galloway each secured one medal.

Indiana Institute of Technology ran away with its second consecutive NAIA title. The Warriors totaled 127 points over the weekend with William Carey University (Miss.) finishing a distant second with 55 points.

The Saints have the next two weekends off before opening the outdoor season at the Olivet Nazarene University Spring Opener on March 26.
