Sam Mickelson tied his personal-best time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the NAIA Men's Outdoor Track & Field National Championships on Wednesday night, but came up just short of advancing to the finals in the event.
Mickelson registered a time of 9:25.81, which was the exact same time that he ran at the CCAC Championships earlier this month. That placed him 18th in a field of 39 runners. To advance to the finals, he needed to finish among the top 14 runners and shave just over seven seconds off his time.
Thomas Oliver of Doane University (Neb.) recorded the fastest time at 9:04.90.
Mickelson's performance concludes USF's outdoor season.
