BOURBONNAIS, Ill. ---
Sam Mickelson scored a pair of runner-up finishes to lead the University of St. Francis men's indoor track & field team to a fifth-place finish at the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Indoor Championships over the weekend.
Mickelson was one of nine Saints to help produce the team's 48 total points, but the only one to score in two individual competitions.
Jack Wright and
Pedro Ocampo earned one top eight individual finish each, while also scoring as part of USF's 4x800-meter second-place finisher.
Olivet Nazarene University claimed the league championship crown with its 278-point total, followed by St. Ambrose University (230), Saint Xavier University (83) and Trinity Christian College (55). A total of nine teams made up the field.
Mickelson placed second in both the 3,000- and 5,000-meter races. His time in the former event was 8:43.65, while the latter saw him cross the finish line in 15:27.09.
The other runner-up finish was secured by the 4x800-meter team of Wright, Ocampo,
Erik Tejeda and
Tizoc Landeros, who clocked in at 8:13.74. Ocampo went on to place fifth in the mile run (4:27.03), while Wright finished seventh in the 3,000-meter race (8:55.24).
The Saints also had a pair of fourth-place finishers in
Noah Friske and
Miguel Garcia. Friske earned his placement in the mile (4:21.88), while Garcia did so in the 5,000-meter race (15:52.35).
Besides Ocampo, earning fifth-place finishes and four points each were
Michael Reif and
Jabreel Washington. Reif gained his mark in the 3,000-meter race (8:53.39), while Washington did so in the long jump (20 feet, five inches).
The NAIA Indoor Championships are up next for the Saints in Brookings S. Dak. Feb. 29-March 2.
