Box Score 2 ROSEMONT, Ill. --- Roosevelt University snapped the University of St. Francis softball team's season-high eight-game winning streak by limiting the Fighting Saints to a combined five hits in 2-1 and 1-0 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference setbacks Sunday afternoon at The Ballpark at Rosemont.
USF (17-7, 4-2 CCAC) was held to just three hits in the opener, while producing a pair of extra-base hits in the nightcap.Â
Bridget McDermott accounted for two of St. Francis' hits with a single in the opener and a double in the nightcap.
McDermott (3-2) and
Hannah Vachon (9-2) did all they could in the circle to keep the games close, holding the Lakers (10-7, 2-1) to just the three runs.
Game 1: Roosevelt 2, USF 1
The Saints put runners in scoring position in just two of the seven innings and scored in one of them. That came in the third inning after Roosevelt had just plated the first run of the contest one-half inning earlier.Â
Gracyn Gabriel provided the RBI single to account for USF's only run of the day.
Roosevelt scored the eventual game-winning run in the fourth inning on a two-out single. The Lakers also threatened in the fifth inning by loading the bases with only one out, but Vachon was able to quell the rally with back-to-back outs.
Vachon, who had her scoreless streak snapped at 37 innings in the second frame, struck out six against one walk. She allowed eight hits and the two runs in her six innings.
USF did have one final chance to at least knot the score at six-all in the sixth inning. Head coach
Amanda Jensen's club had runners on first and second base with two outs, but could not push the run home.
Game 2: Roosevelt 1, USF 0
The Saints had a pair of opportunities to score in the early innings before Roosevelt hurlers Samantha Norman and Kate Sisson shut the door on USF. The pair combined to retire the final ten batters of the game and 13 of the last 14 in the contest.
McDermott had a one-out double in the second inning, but could only get as far as third base.Â
Brittany Osborne had a two-out triple in the third inning.Â
The game remained scoreless until the sixth inning when Roosevelt had the first two batters reach base via a hit. They eventually moved up one base on a sacrifice before a sacrifice fly produced the only run of the contest.
Norman (5-1) and Sisson provided a one-two punch in the circle for the Lakers. Norman registered both wins with five innings as the starter in Game 1 and two as a reliever in the nightcap. She struck out 11 batters on the day, while allowing just the one earned run.Â
Sisson was the exact opposite with two innings of relief in the opener and the first five innings in Game 2. She did not allow a run in her seven innings and gained credit for the save in the first contest.
McDermott was solid in her complete-game effort, allowing just the one run on six hits with five strikeouts against one walk. Â Â
Notes: USF's two hits in the nightcap were its lowest total of the season and its five combined were the fewest for a doubleheader … On the pitching side, the Saints continued to impress having allowed just four runs in the last nine games … The second-game shutout was just the second time USF has not scored a run in a contest this season … Osborne had her club-high 12-game hitting streak snapped in Game 1, while her,
Maddie Massaro and
Danielle Callahan saw their streaks of reaching base come to an end at 12, 13 and ten games, respectively … In their only contests of the week, the Saints host Saint Xavier University in a doubleheader on Wednesday beginning at 3:30 pm.
