Box Score 2 TUCSON, Ariz. --- Tuesday was a tale of two games for the University of St. Francis softball team.
The Fighting Saints tied a season-high with their 17 hits in a 9-6 victory over Dakota Wesleyan University (SD) before being shutout for the first time in 2023 in the nightcap by a 5-0 count against Ottawa University (Ariz.).
A total of six USF players produced multi-hit games on the day, including
Madisen Tucker, who tallied a combined three hits over the two games. Two of
Danielle Callahan's three hits in Game 1 went for extra bases, including her second home run of the season.
Game 1: USF 9, Dakota Wesleyan 6
The Saints (7-3) opened up a 9-0 lead before Dakota Wesleyan (4-11) made things interesting at the end with five runs in the fifth inning and one more in the sixth inning.
Nine Saints in all registered hits with Callahan,
Bridget McDermott,
Kaylie Sippel and
Kenna Kleinert all posting three hits. Callahan and McDermott also drove in a pair of runs, while Tucker and Sippel had one RBI.
Callahan's two-run home run came in a three-run fourth inning and put the Saints up 7-0 at that point. She also had a double in USF's four-run third inning.
Hannah Vachon (3-1) authored her team-leading third win of the campaign by going the first 4 1/3 innings. She struck out four batters, while not allowing a walk. Â
Game 2: Ottawa 5, USF 0
St. Francis managed just four hits in Game 2 with only one runner getting as far as second base. Tucker and
Maddie Massaro collected the only hits with a pair each.
Eight of nine Ottawa starters recorded hits with the Spirit (16-8) scoring at least one run in four of the first five innings.
Notes: The Saints also registered 17 hits on Sunday against College of Saint Mary (Neb.) … Kleinert's three-hit game was her first of the season … Callahan's multi-hit game was her team-leading sixth of the campaign … McDermott and
Gracyn Gabriel both had their streaks of reaching base stopped at nine games in the nightcap … The split decision was the third in as many days for St. Francis … After taking Wednesday off, USF meets up with Concordia University (Neb.) and University of Jamestown (ND) for a second time on Thursday.
