NOTRE DAME, Ind.--- The University of St. Francis men's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to Holy Cross College in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference play at the Eck Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon.
In doubles play, the duos of Daniel Espinosa (JR/Bogota, Columbia), Martin Rayos Del Sol (JR/Romeoville, Ill.), and, Aidan Flores (FR/New Lenox, Ill.), Javier Alonso Egea (SO/L'eliana, Spain) each lost their matchups 6-1 to give the hosts an early 1-0 lead.
In singles action, Espinosa (No. 4), Rayos Del Sol (No.5), Erwan Le Guennec (SR/Ercuis, France) (No. 2) and John Hejl (FR/Lockport, Ill.) (No.6) all fell in straight sets to their opponents. Paul Wottgen (FR/Leinburg, Germany) made his Saints debut and fell in straight sets 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.
Egea fought hard until the end in his match at No. 1 singles. After taking his opponent to a tiebreaker finish in their first set, the Spanish native won his second set 6-1. Egea would lose the tiebreaking set 11-9 giving Holy Cross the 7-0 victory.
With the loss, the Saints fall to 1-1 overall and 1-1 in CCAC action.
Next up for USF is its home opener on March 23 against Lewis University. The match is scheduled to begin at noon at Challenge Fitness.
