CHICAGO -- A busy week turned into an awards-filled one for the University of St. Francis after teammates Missy Saldana and Kaitlyn Schofield garnered Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference weekly softball accolades for the seven-day period ending March 15. The league office made the announcement on Tuesday morning.
Schofield repeated as the CCAC Pitcher of the Week after earning four wins with three complete games and one shutout during an eight-game stretch. She also registered 30 strikeouts over her 37 2/3 innings in the circle and allowed just seven earned runs. That resulted in a 1.30 earned run average to go along with a 1.06 WHIP.
Schofield's blanking came in a 2-0 victory over Bellevue University (Neb.) to start the week last Monday. She also combined on another shutout in an 11-0 decision over University of Northwestern Ohio on Friday, where she tossed the first four innings of the five-inning affair.
The junior hurler's top performance of the week came last Tuesday in a 2-1 win over Lourdes University (Ohio), where she yielded just two hits and one walk, while striking out five batters. She then completed the week by throwing no-hit ball over 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to earn the 7-5 come-from-behind victory over Defiance College (Ohio). Of the 12 batters she faced in that contest, she struck out seven.
Saldana claimed CCAC Player of the Week recognition after hitting .406, scoring nine times and driving in four runs from the leadoff spot in the Saints' 7-3 week. She delivered multi-hit games in five of the team's ten games, all of which were wins. The highlight was a perfect 3-for-3 effort in a 10-0 victory over Kent State University Tuscarawas on Thursday.
In total, the freshman outfielder/third baseman collected 13 hits with four going for doubles, one of which was a walk-off in the Lourdes victory. She also coaxed four walks.
St. Francis moved to 14-7 on the season with its successful week.
