CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa/BOURBONNAIS, Ill. -- Led by
Sam Mickelson,
Scott Tumilty and
Jerrico Rodriguez, the University of St. Francis men's outdoor track & field team gained six Top 10 finishes between the Mount Mercy University Mustang Distance Carnival on Friday and the Olivet Nazarene University Tiger Open on Saturday.
At the Mount Mercy meet, Mickelson opened the day with a first-place finish in the steeplechase event. He recorded a time of 9:40.21 in a field of 11 competitors.
The Saints then put together a contingent of six runners that competed in the 5,000-meter race with
Scott Crabb (15:05.57) highlighting the sextet with his third-place finish.
Alberto Fernandez Arango followed up with an 11th place standing at 15:27.41.
Miguel Garcia (13th place, 15:32.96),
Manuel Soto (14th place, 15:34.23) and
Jack Wright (15th place, 15:34.72) all crossed the finish line within two seconds of each other, and
Tizoc Landeros rounded out the group with the 31st-best time at 16:25.50.
Fernandez Arango, Soto and Landeros all posted PR's on the day.
Highlighting the list of performers at the Tiger Open with Top 5 finishes were Tumilty and Rodriguez.
Tumilty placed second overall in the 200-meter race in a time of 21.56. The time was the third-best mark in USF program history, placing him below
Jordan Duncan (21.36) and
Brandon Ruffin (21.42).
Rodriguez, meanwhile, authored a third-place finish in the triple jump with a final distance of 12.54 meters.
Tumilty (100-meter dash) and Rodriquez (long jump) also registered Top 10 placements. Tumilty claimed sixth place overall with a time of 10.98, while Rodriguez finished in eighth place with a distance of 6.10 meters. Rodriguez also competed in the 200-meter event, placing 31st at 23.65.
Other competitors for St. Francis on the day included
Montrell Chapman (100m - 11.76, 200m - 24.16),
Jonathan Tavares (800m - 2:06.69),
Alex Aragon (800m - 2:12.53, 1500m - 4:27.94) and
James Zilinger (discus - 25.79m). Tavaras' time was a PR for him.
No team scores were recorded at the meet.
