Saints Improve To 4-1 In Conference Play

WHITING, Ind. --- Double-doubles from Gabriela Oliveira and Kaylie Sippel led the University of St. Francis women's volleyball team to its fourth Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference victory in five matches as the Fighting Saints scored a 25-20, 25-14, 28-26 victory over Calumet College of St. Joseph on Tuesday night.

Oliveira had another strong attacking night with her .333 hitting clip producing a match-high 14 kills to go along with 10 digs.  Sippel hit .333, as well, with her six kills, while totaling 27 assists and a game-high 17 digs.

Other defensive standouts were Cadence Wodrich and Taylor Connolly with six and four blocks, respectively.  Both were season-best efforts.

USF (5-8, 4-1 CCAC) finished the night hitting .248 to Calumet's .106 reading.

The first set was tight early before the Saints broke an 11-all tie with seven of the next eight points.  Sippel had a pair of kills in the run, while Oliveira provided a kill and an assist.  Calumet (1-8, 0-4) was able to get within 22-20 before USF tallied the final three points.

In the second set, St. Francis jumped on top 9-3 with kills from four different players including two from Connolly.  The Saints would have a pair of 4-0 runs later on, the latter of which put them up 2-0 in the contest.

The third set was the closest of the three with 13 ties and five lead changes, which were no more than three points either way.  USF trailed 23-21 late, but scored seven of the final ten points to put the wraps on the sweep.

Notes: Oliveira's double-double was her second of the season, while for Sippel, it was her fourth … Sippel's 17 digs were a season-high mark … Connolly tied a career high with her four blocks … The Saints concluded their longest road trip of the year by splitting their eight matches evenly .. Head coach Cara Currier's club takes its longest break of the season (11 days) before returning on Sept. 30 to host conference frontrunner Judson University.
