NORMAL, Ill. --- In a field of better than 200 golfers,
John Weis placed in a tie for 15th place to lead the University of St. Francis men's golf team at the Illinois Wesleyan University Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
After a rough first day, where the Saints recorded a 327 to place in a tie for 29th, they rebounded nicely on Saturday turning in the seventh-best round among 37 teams with a 300. That enabled them to finish the two-day meet in 26th place with a two-round score of 627.
Host Illinois Wesleyan won the event with its 587 (287-300), finishing 15-over-par as a team. Thomas Gutzmer of St. John's University (Minn.) claimed individual medalist honors by shooting four-under par 139 (71-68) for the two days. He was the only golfer among 213 to shoot below par.
Weis recorded USF's lowest rounds on both days. He was the only Saint to shoot below 80 on Friday before leading a contingent of four golfers to score in the 70's on Saturday.
He carded a 78 on Friday and a 71 on Saturday to move from tied for 92nd place to the 15th-place finish with his two-day 149.
Nolan Weis was next in line for the Saints with his 155 over the two days. He opened with an 80 on Friday before carding a 75 on Saturday.
Each of USF's four scoring players improved by no less than five strokes between Days 1 and 2 with
EJ Charles showing the biggest gains. After recording an 85 on Friday, he responded with a 76 on Saturday for a two-day 166.
Andrew Rada completed USF's scoring with his 84 and 78 for a 162.
The Saints played Weibring Golf Club on Friday followed by Ironwood Golf Course on Saturday.
They host their own Spring Invitational on Tuesday at Wedgewood Golf Course.
