Baseball Splits With Viterbo On Senior Day

JOLIET, Ill. -- A first-game victory enabled the University of St. Francis baseball team to gain a split against Viterbo University (Wis.) before the V-Hawks outlasted the Fighting Saints 2-1 in Game 2 of its Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday at Slammers Stadium.  St. Francis muscled its way to a 9-2 win in the opener.  St. Francis honored its 22 seniors – Zac Blazekovich, Max Montgomery, Joel Hunt, Ethan Fleming, Will Calcaterra, Jacob Jurka, Quinn McGuire, Haruki Maruyama, Jacob Blim, Mitchell Thomas, Brant Singler, Josh Ladislas, Cody Nold, Luke Guenther, Jake Merda, Brian Graves, Jack Otis, Cristopher Villwock, Nate Maliska, Dylan Scafuri, Mateo Villagomez and Anthony Panzella - before the first game.

USF's first-game victory enabled the Saints (20-28, 17-15 CCAC) to lock up their berth as the fifth seed into this coming week's CCAC Tournament.

Seven different Saints registered multiple hits on the afternoon led by third baseman Ryan Louthan, who went 3-for-6 with two RBIs between the two games.  Dylan Scafuri also went 3-for-6 on the afternoon, while Ethan Fleming led all hitters with three runs scored.

Game 1:  USF 9, Viterbo 2
Aided by two multiple-run innings, eight Saint players in all recorded at least one hit in the contest, in St. Francis' 9-2 Game 1 victory.

After spotting one run to the guests in the fourth inning, St. Francis responded by scoring three runs of its own in the sixth frame.  The Saints later plated a single run in the seventh and five more in the eighth before allowing one tally to the V-Hawks (11-34, 7-25) in the final frame to mark the final score at 9-2.

Nate Maliska, Louthan, Dominik Alberico, Scafuri and Fleming each had a pair of hits as part of USF's 13-hit attack.  Maliksa, Louthan and Noah Munson all drove in two runs each.

Louthan collected both of his RBIs in the sixth inning, before capping his offensive day off in the eighth with a single that would later come around to score as part of Munson's two-RBI double in that frame.  Alberico also had a RBI base hit in the fourth inning and joined four other Saints – including Munson - in securing a hit in the eighth stanza.

Maliska authored one RBI in each of the seventh (single) and eighth (sacrifice fly) innings, while Fleming drove home Jaedon Martin in the eighth via a RBI-single.

Jacob Jurka took credit for the win on the mound, upping his record to 2-3 on the year.  Cristopher Villwock and Zac Blazekovich combined to work the final 1 and 1/3 innings in relief, with the duo retiring four of the five batters they faced.

Game 2:  Viterbo 2, USF 1
Up until the seventh inning, the St. Francis pitching staff dominated Viterbo's hitters, allowing just three hits, with only one V-Hawk being able to reach scoring position.  The seventh frame would tell a different story, however, with the guests connecting for three hits which produced two runs, erasing a productive day for starting pitcher Jack Otis, who was credited with a no decision after tallying five strikeouts against two walks in his 5 1/3 innings of work.  The Saints were able to plate one run and put the game tying and winning runs on second and third base with one out in the bottom of the seventh as a result of a Scafuri RBI-double, but were unable to get the clutch hit amongst the next two batters, ending the game with a 2-1 final score.

Quinn McGuire (0-1) took the loss for the Saints on the mound, giving up two hits and two earned runs in his 1 1/3 innings of work.
