Scafuri's Near-Perfect Day Sparks Season Sweep of Calumet St. Joseph

WHITING, Ind. --- Dylan Scafuri put on a hitting display and he and Noah Munson combined to drive in 12 runs on the day as the University of St. Francis baseball team swept the four-game Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference series from Calumet College of St. Joseph with 19-8 and 9-3 victories on Saturday afternoon at Oil City Stadium.

Scafuri was near-perfect at the plate on the day, reaching base eight of the ten times he batted, including all six times in the opener.  The senior designated hitter sparked a 12-run second inning in that game with his first collegiate grand slam.  He also doubled three times and walked twice, while driving in six runs.

In Game 2, he went 1-for-3 with a walk and a run batted in.

Munson (5 RBIs) was one of three Saints to register four hits on the day, being joined by Nate Maliska and Ryan Louthan.  Maliska and Louthan also provided a pair of runs batted in.

On the mound, Jacob Jurka (1-1) and Michael Leonard (1-1) each collected their first wins of the season.

Game 1: USF 19, Calumet St. Joseph 8
The Saints (7-9, 4-0 CCAC) spotted Calumet St. Joseph (1-11, 0-4) a pair of runs in the first inning before sending 17 batters to the plate in the second frame.  Besides Scafuri's big blow, Maliska (2 hits) and Max Montgomery (2 hits, 3 RBIs) both had a two-run single in the inning, while Ethan Fleming (1 RBI) singled in each of his two at-bats in the frame.

Scafuri was just getting started.  He would also double in the third, fifth and seventh innings and walk in the second and sixth.  His final double produced another two runs.

Other big bats in the contest were Louthan (3 hits, 1 RBI) and Munson (2 hits, 3 RBIs).

Leonard struck out five batters in his five innings of work before yielding to Frank Curbis for the final two frames.

Game 2: USF, Calumet St. Joseph 3
For the second game in a row, the hosts opened with a two-run first inning and their 2-1 lead lasted through the first four frames before unraveling.  An error in both the fifth and seventh innings proved costly to the Crimson Wave, leading to eight unearned runs.

Jake Merda made CCSJ pay in the three-run fifth inning with his go-ahead two-run triple.  Munson (2 hits) drove in two and Louthan and Scafuri one each in the five-run seventh inning.

Maliska posted his second two-hit game, with Mitchell Thomas adding a pair of singles.

Jurka tossed three innings of one-hit, scoreless relief to earn the win.  Cody Nold and Zac Blazekovich also had one scoreless inning each.
