No. 15 Saints Fall Short in Loss to Olivet Nazarene

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. -- Seeking to secure its twentieth win of the season, the University of St. Francis women's basketball team came up on the short end of a 91-77 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference decision to Olivet Nazarene University on Saturday afternoon.

While St. Francis (19-2, 11-2 CCAC) did have four players reach double-digits in the scoring column along with a total of 10 three-pointers to ONU's five, head coach John McGinty's team could not offset a 20-point differential in points off turnovers which led to the Fighting Saints falling for just the second time this season.  Le'lani Harris (21 points) and Tykara Harrison (20) each netted 20-plus point nights, while Symone Harrell accounted for 11 markers.  Coryn Fromm was one point behind finishing with 10.

Olivet Nazarene (15-5, 11-1) led for the majority of a tight first quarter, only increasing its lead to as many as five points just over the midpoint of the period.  Seven straight points over the next two minutes enabled the Saints to secure its only lead of the contest (16-14) with 2:12 remaining in the frame before the Tigers benefited from nine USF turnovers to surge back with a 25-5 run of their own to carry an 18-point advantage into the first five minutes of the second quarter.

Despite a 16-5 differential in turnovers, a 13-of-28 (46.4 pct.) first-half shooting effort from the field kept the Saints in the contest and countered ONU's 18-of-46 (39.1 pct.) showing, allowing the Saints to cut their deficit to 11 at the intermission (45-34).

Using another double-digit scoring burst to the start of the second half, the Tigers eventually ballooned their lead up to 67-46 with 2:29 remaining in the third quarter, but then went cold from the field over the next four minutes of play. ONU would only connect on two free throws while going 0-for-5 from the field during a 23-2 run by USF, which allowed the Saints to come within nine points at 69-60.

USF would also trail by that same nine-point margin (81-72) with 3:39 in the fourth quarter before Olivet Nazarene sealed the win with another 10-0 surge to go up 91-72 with 50 seconds remaining.

The Saints finished the second half shooting at an improved .484 clip (15-of-31) with five treys, but it was not enough to outshine ONU's 56.7 pct. mark (17-of-30).  For the game, USF shot .459 (28-of-61) to ONU's .461 mark (35-of-76).  Turnovers played a key role in the game with the Tigers authoring a 38-18 advantage by the game's end.

Lindsey Nell topped the offensive effort for Olivet Nazarene.  She totaled 18 points to go along with her game-high eight rebounds.
