ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- Three members of the University of St. Francis men's bowling team earned Top 10 billings as both the varsity and junior varsity squads claimed top three finishes at the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Greater Detroit Open on Saturday. USF's varsity team grabbed the runner-up spot, with the junior varsity group placing third.
Jacob Gunther led the Saints' varsity charge with a total of 685 pins knocked down over three games, finishing four pins ahead of
Jalen Pfaff (681). Gunther placed sixth overall, while Pfaff was seventh.
Joseph Koc, a member of the junior varsity team, was right behind the pair, finishing in a tie for the No. 8 position. He shot a 674 over his three games. Koc also tied for the second-best game overall among the 138 total bowlers with his 279 to open the morning session. He followed with games of 210 and 185 for a 224.7 average.
Gunther's breakdown had him at 204-233-248 to produce his 228.3 average. Pfaff started off the day with a 238, followed by rounds of 206 and 237 for his 227.0 average.
As a result of their Top 8 performances, Gunter, Pfaff and Koc all earned All-Tournament Team honors.
Other St. Francis players among the Top 25 finishers were
Dylan Holtz (No. 14) and
Gabriel Mejia Wick (No. 23). Holtz averaged a 221.0 (202-213-248), while Mejia Wick put up a 214.0 mark (222-235-185).
Aquinas College's Nick Schaberg led all bowlers with his 749-pin count (249.7 avg.).
Indiana Institute of Technology won both titles. The varsity team scored a 6,773 to USF's 6,470 mark. The junior varsity team produced a 6,244, just ahead of both Lawrence Technological University (Mich.) (6,236) and the Saints (6,142).
