KANSAS CITY, Mo./CHICAGO -- Three-time NAIA Scholar-Athletes
Ander Santamarta and
Daniel Simon were two of eight members of the University of St. Francis men's soccer team to gain that distinction for 2024 and two of nine to secure placement on the recently-released Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference All-Academic Team for this past fall.
Santamarta and Simon were joined by repeat choicesÂ
Pablo Alvarez andÂ
Erick Guzman on the NAIA Scholar-Athlete list. First-time honorees includedÂ
Dominik Barwiolek,
Jose Zaragoza,
Pablo Rubio Guerra and
Mateo Del Bosque.
In order to receive that recognition, nominees must be a sophomore or above in academic standing, must have been in attendance at the nominating institution for one full academic year and must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.50 or higher at the time of the nomination deadline.
On the CCAC honor roll, the octet added teammate
Sergio Fernandez-Arango to the group. It marked the first time the senior defender has been awarded the recognition by the league office. He is a Finance major.
To be nominated for the CCAC award, a student-athlete must have been enrolled at his school for a minimum of one academic year, have completed at least 30 semester hours and boast no less than a 3.25 cumulative grade point average.
Santamarta, a senior midfielder, and Simon, a senior defender, gained the three-peat on both awards. Both individuals are pursing degrees in Mathematics and Computer Science.
Simon was also one of only seven players among the 122 individuals dotting the league list to boast a perfect 4.00 cumulative grade point average.
Alvarez and Guzman are each two-time recipients on both fronts. Alvarez is a senior International Business major, while Guzman is majoring in Psychology. Both men play along the back line for the Saints.
After claiming his third league recognition, Barwiolek added NAIA Scholar-Athlete status to his list of accomplishments for the first time this year. Â The senior forward is a Criminal and Social Justice major.
Rubio Guerra and Zaragoza both gained the set of recognitions for the first time, while each repeated as league honorees from one year ago. Rubio Guerra is a senior forward majoring in International Business and Zaragoza is a senior midfielder seeking a degree in Biology.
In his first year of eligibility, Del Bosque marked his name on both award lists. The sophomore forward is working on a Bachelor's degree in Radiation Therapy.
