Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Saints Rally Twice To Gain Tie With Judson

JOLIET, Ill. --- Isabel Diez scored a pair of goals and Kelly Flores provided a pair of assists as the University of St. Francis women's soccer team battled back from 2-0 and 3-2 deficits to gain a 3-3 tie with Judson University in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference play Saturday afternoon at Joliet Memorial Stadium.

For both players, it was their first points donning the Fighting Saints uniform and sparked the initial comeback after getting behind 2-0 at the 30-minute mark.  Flores assisted on each of Diez's tallies, which came in the 30th and 36th minutes.  Daisy Garcia accounted for each of Judson's first two goals.

The Eagles (2-2-2, 1-0-1 CCAC) would regain the lead just 53 seconds before halftime on Maria Artaloitia's goal.  She also registered the assist on Judson's second goal.

USF (0-5-4, 0-1-2) was not about to give in, having already overcome the earlier deficit.  This time, it was Zoe Villont, who came through with her first goal as a Saint in the 55th minute.  Abbey Janeczek was credited with the assist on the play.

The six combined goals were a season high for a St. Francis game this year, but it did not have that appearance early on with the first shot of the contest not coming until the 18th minute when USF's Andrea Aguirre broke the ice with her shot on goal.  Judson followed with an attempt two minutes later that hit the crossbar before the Eagles struck first with their goal at 22:30.

Judson's second goal came off a corner kick at 29:21, which the Saints matched with Flores' own corner kick to Diez just 65 seconds later.  Diez' second goal also came off a Flores corner kick.

After yielding the three goals in the first 45 minutes, USF shored things up defensively in the second half highlighted by the play of Kadixamayrin Mireles, who came on to tend goal after the break.  Making her first appearance of the season, the sophomore stopped all three shots that came her way to record the second-half shutout.

The Saints outshot Judson for the match, 21-16, including tripling up on the number of second-half attempts.  After recording just five total shots in the first 45 minutes, head coach Al Palar's team produced 16 shots after the break with eight coming on goal, including Villont's to force the second tie.

Joana Mercado had seven saves for Judson, six of which came after the break.

Notes: The three goals scored by the Saints were a season-high mark as were their 21 total shots and ten shots on goal … Mireles' appearance was just her second at St. Francis, the other one being an 11-minute stint back in October of last year … Villont now has a goal to go with her assist recorded earlier this month … Janeczek's assist was her first as a Saint … Seven of nine USF contests this season have been decided by either one goal or resulted in ties … The match was the first of four over the next five games to be played at Joliet Memorial Stadium.  Up next is a Wednesday night date (7 pm) with Indiana University South Bend in Joliet.
