Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Saints Make For A Great Home Opener

JOLIET, Ill. --- Jesus Flores recorded his first multi-goal game, Erick Murillo authored his first collegiate shutout and the University of St. Francis men's soccer team opened the home portion of its season with a 5-0 victory over Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (Ind.) on Tuesday night at Joliet Memorial Stadium.  A four-goal second half created for the convincing win.

Pablo Rubio Guerra also remained a scoring force with his goal and two assists.  In fact, he and Flores teamed up on the only goal in the first half at the 8:23 mark.  Flores' other score came at 78:04.

Rubio Guerra was involved in each of USF's first three tallies.  He started the four-goal second half at 62:24 with his pass from Santos Contreras.  Less than two minutes later, he hooked up with Sergio Fernandez-Arango to make it 3-0.

The Fighting Saints, winners of three in a row, collected their final goal from Jose Perez in the 80th minute.

Murillo recorded the shutout with three saves, all of which came in the opening 45 minutes.  Saint Mary-of-the-Woods (0-5-1) managed only five second-half shots after taking eight in the initial half.

St. Francis (3-2) totaled 27 shots with ten being on goal.

Notes: The five goals scored were a season high as were the team's 27 total shots … In each of the four matches in which the Saints have scored, Fernandez-Arango has provided at least one of those goals … Rubio Guerra has now scored a goal or provided an assist in three of the team's five matches … Fernandez-Arango holds a tight 11-10 point-advantage over Rubio Guerra with his team-leading four goals.  Rubio Guerra leads the club in assists with four … Flores' goals were his second and third of the campaign, while Perez's was his second … Contreras' assist was his first of the year … The Saints open conference play on Saturday hosting Trinity Christian College at 3:30 pm.
