Conference Opener Nets Fourth Straight Win For Saints

JOLIET, Ill. --- The tandem of Pablo Rubio Guerra and Sergio Fernandez-Arango continued their scoring frenzy on Saturday afternoon as the University of St. Francis men's soccer team opened the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference season with a 2-0 victory over Trinity Christian College at Joliet Memorial Stadium.  The win was the fourth in a row for the Fighting Saints, who improved to 4-2 overall.

Fernandez-Arango contributed to both scores with his goal and assist, while Rubio Guerra broke the scoreless tie with less than three minutes remaining before the break.  For the latter, it was his fourth goal in the last three games.

Fernandez-Arango extended his scoring streak to four contests – the same as USF's winning streak – when he added an insurance tally in the 77th minute.  The junior was right in front of the net when Trinity goalkeeper Giorgos Christodoulo could not hang on to Daniel Simon's shot on goal and Fernandez-Arango punched it into the net.  Simon was credited with the assist.

Erick Murillo authored his second shutout in a row, stopping three shots.  The Saints also had one back save late in the contest by Pablo Alvarez.

USF totaled only nine shots with five being on goal and connection on 40 percent of its attempts.  Trinity Christian (2-3-2, 0-1 CCAC) produced 12 shots, ten of which came in the second half.

Notes: USF's winning streak is the longest since 2019 when that team also won four straight … The Saints have outscored the opposition 13-2 during the streak … Fernandez-Arango has scored four goals and provided two assists during St. Francis' victory run … Rubio Guerra has tallied all four of his goals and three of his four assists on the season in the last three contests … Murillo has allowed just one goal in the last 319 minutes, 21 seconds.  In that time, he has recorded 10 saves …  The Saints are 6-0-1 against Trinity Christian in their last seven meetings … USF is on the road Wednesday to take on Holy Cross College at 3 pm.
