DAVENPORT, Iowa ---
Hannah Vachon and
Madisen Tucker both allowed just one run on four hits in route-going performances Monday afternoon to extend the University of St. Francis softball team's winning streak to six games with its 4-1 and 2-1 victories over St. Ambrose University in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference play.
The Fighting Saints (23-7, 10-2 CCAC) took advantage of three costly St. Ambrose errors in the opener before relying upon
Kaylie Sippel in the nightcap. She drove in both runs in Game 2.
Danielle Callahan, meanwhile, provided a pair of RBIs in the opener as part of a three-hit afternoon for her. Tucker also had three hits besides her work in the circle.
Game 1: USF 4, St. Ambrose 1
Callahan's first RBI came on a fielder's choice in the opening inning to score the initial unearned run of the game. St. Ambrose (20-20, 7-5) matched that run in the bottom half of the inning before the Saints went up for good in the third inning, where they produced half (three) of their hits for the game.
Back-to-back doubles from
Gracyn Gabriel and Callahan were two of those hits to plate the second run. The other two unearned runs came in the fourth inning, where USF gained a three-run cushion.
At the same time, Vachon (12-2) was putting together a string of retiring 10 batters in a row. The Bees finally threatened in the fifth inning when they loaded the bases with no one out, but Vachon was able to get out of that inning with a popout, fielder's choice and strikeout looking.
St. Ambrose would never threaten again as Vachon would close out the contest retiring nine of the last ten batters she faced. She finished the game with seven strikeouts against only one walk and the four hits allowed.
Tucker had the only multi-hit game for the Saints, collecting a single and a double. Â Â Â Â Â
Game 2: USF 2, St. Ambrose 1 Â Â
The Saints had numerous opportunities to break the contest open only to leave 13 runners on base for the game, including the bases full in three of the seven innings. Nonetheless, Sippel was there to close out the sweep with an RBI groundout in the first inning and the game-winning hit in the fifth inning.
The latter RBI was the third of three straight hits to open the frame. Gabriel started it with her second double of the afternoon with Callahan pushing her to third with a single.
St. Ambrose's only run came in the fourth inning, where it had two of its four hits. Prior to that, Tucker (5-1) retired nine of the first ten batters she faced. She struck out three and walked one.
Callahan was one of eight Saints to record hits, but she was the only one with two.
Notes: Over the past 15 games, where the Saints have gone 13-2, head coach
Amanda Jensen's team has allowed less than one run per contest (13 total). Take out the 7-6 win against Saint Xavier University and it is seven runs allowed in 14 games …
Bridget McDermott saw her season-high eight-game winning streak come to an end in Game 1 … The Saints take their perfect 10-0 record at home into a conference doubleheader against Judson University on Wednesday. Â
