Warner Rallies To Upend Saints

LAKE WALES, Fla. --- Warner University (Fla.) rallied from 4-0 and 7-4 deficits with nine unanswered runs over the final four innings to defeat the University of St. Francis baseball team 13-7 on Monday night.

Jake Vera's two-run double got the Fighting Saints (5-11) off to a 3-0 lead in the second inning and Alex Mielcarz made it a 4-0 game one inning later on a sacrifice fly.  Warner got each of those runs back in the bottom half of the third inning when six straight batters reached base after one out.  USF also committed two errors in the frame leading to a pair of unearned runs.

For the game, St. Francis totaled five errors leading to five unearned runs.

Quinn McGuire then sparked a three-run fourth inning with his first home run of the season to regain the advantage at 7-4.  Eric Maffie also drove in a run with a double in the inning.

Maffie's hit, however, would be the last one until the ninth inning for the Saints as Warner relievers retired 12 straight batters from the fourth through eighth innings when USF coaxed two walks.  Nate Maliska broke the hitless streak in the ninth inning with the second of his two hits in the contest.

Luke Ketchum (two doubles) and Josh Kirnbauer also had two-hit games for USF.

Jonathan Alonso went 4-for-5 with four runs batted in for Warner (13-8).

Notes: Quinn McGuire's home run was his first as a Saint … John McGuire extended his streak of getting on base to nine games with his third-inning walk … Saint pitchers struggled to find their control in the contest, allowing seven walks, hitting four batters and throwing five wild pitches … The task gets no easier on Tuesday for the Saints, who go up against NAIA No. 1-ranked Southeastern University.  The Fire are perfect through its first 21 games.
