BABSON PARK, Fla. --- NAIA No. 9-ranked Webber International University held the University of St. Francis baseball team to just one run on Sunday afternoon as the Warriors improved to 19-3 on the season with 5-0 and 8-1 victories.
While the Fighting Saints (5-10) were limited to just three hits in the opener, they did have their chances in the nightcap. Despite getting seven hits and coaxing six walks, however, USF left 14 runners on base, including multiple runners in each of the first five innings.
Webber International used big sixth innings in each end of the twinbill to pull away. The two teams were scoreless in Game 1 before the Warriors plated all of their runs in the sixth inning. In Game 2, WIU turned a 4-1 lead into the 8-1 final by scoring four times in its last at bat.
Gio Pappas was the only Saint player to have multiple hits in either game, going 2-for-3 and driving in the team's only run in the second contest.Â
Alex Mielcarz and
Max Montgomery recorded one hit in each end of the doubleheader.
Angel Diaz drove in three runs in each of the two games for the winners.
Game 1: Webber International 5, USF 0
John McGuire matched Webber International's Xavier Rodriguez (3-0) with five scoreless innings on the mound before being replaced. McGuire allowed only two hits, while striking out three against just one walk. Rodriguez went the distance, yielding only three hits and two walks against six strikeouts.
Each of the first five batters reached base in the big sixth inning for Webber International, including Diaz with his bases-clearing double.
Eric Maffie, Mielcarz and Montgomery each had a single for the Saints to account for their offense. No USF runner got beyond second base.
Game 2: Webber International 8, USF 1
The Warriors scored the only two runs they needed in the opening inning and had Diaz drive in three of the first four runs.
Pappas made it a 3-1 contest in the fifth inning with his RBI single to score

Webber International doubled its run count in the sixth inning with three of the runs being unearned.
The Saints left runners on base in all seven innings – 14 total – including the bases loaded in the third and fourth frames and two runners on in the first, second and fifth innings.

Luke Ketchum returned to the lineup after a three-game absence due to injury, but had his season-opening 10-game streak of reaching base safely come to an end in Game 1 … Also in the first contest,
