JOLIET, Ill. --- Split decisions of Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheaders are starting to go hand in hand for the University of St. Francis baseball team after the Fighting Saints earned their third split in as many league twinbills on Friday afternoon at Duly Health and Care Field. USF was no-hit in a 4-0 first-game decision against Calumet College of St. Joseph before rallying to win the nightcap 3-2.
John McGuire was a key contributor in the Game 2 victory for the Saints (8-19, 3-3 CCAC) with a pair of hits, one run scored and earning the save after striking out the side in the ninth inning.
Game 1: Calumet St. Joseph 4, USF 0
Calumet St. Joseph's Andrew Davenport (2-4) had a day to remember by tossing the seven-inning no-hitter. He also faced the minimum 21 batters after the only St. Francis runner that reached base (error) was eliminated by a double play one batter later in the fifth inning.
Davenport needed just 62 pitches in the outing, striking out nine batters in the process.
The Crimson Wave (10-18, 2-5) got two runs in both the second and fourth innings with Michael Machnic driving in the latter two on his first home run of the season.
Game 2: USF 3, Calumet St. Joseph 2
Eric Maffie's RBI double in the seventh inning proved to be the difference in the end after Calumet St. Joseph had the tying run in scoring position in both the eighth and ninth innings. His hit came with two outs and three batters after
Dan Gusel opened the inning with a single.
Calumet St. Joseph used a bases-loaded walk to open the scoring in the first inning. The Saints got that run back on a two-out RBI single from
Luke Ketchum in the third inning before adding single runs in the sixth and seventh frames.
USF took the lead for good in the sixth inning when McGuire authored a one-out triple and scored one batter later on a
Hector Carrillo groundout.
Calumet St. Joseph made it a one-run game in the eighth inning courtesy of a St. Francis error. The Crimson Wave had the tying run on third base in that same inning and on second in the ninth only to have the McGuire brothers –
Quinn McGuire in the eighth inning and John in the ninth – quash those comeback attempts.
Mack Malczewski (2-2) went the first six innings to earn the win. After a shaky first inning, where he gave up all three of his hits, he did not allow another hit over his final 5 1/3 innings. He also had one stretch where he retired 10 of 11 batters.
Quinn (2 innings) and John (one) both struck out three batters with neither hurler allowing an earned run.
