Saints Drop Season Series To Calumet St. Joseph In Extra Innings

JOLIET, Ill. --- John McGuire and Luke Ketchum had big days offensively, but Calumet College of St. Joseph rallied late to force extra innings and then won the contest 4-3 in the 11th to take the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference season series on Monday afternoon at Duly Health and Care Field.

McGuire (4-for-4) and Ketchum (3-for-5) combined for 70 percent of USF's offense with seven of the Fighting Saints' ten hits, but it was not enough as the Crimson Wave (11-18, 3-5 CCAC) took two-of-three games in the series by scoring once in the eighth inning to tie the contest at three-all and then winning it on Nick Anderson's one-out single in the 11th inning.

The winning run was set up by a leadoff single, followed by a sacrifice and a wild pitch.  The winning hit was one of 15 on the day for Calumet St. Joseph, which left 11 runners on base in the contest.

The Saints (8-20, 3-4) took advantage of a pair of Crimson Wave errors in the second inning to take an initial 1-0 lead.  CCSJ got that run back and another one in the bottom half of the frame.

St. Francis continued the see-saw scoring in the top of the third inning, regaining the edge 3-2 on back-to-back, two-out RBI singles from Brayan Hidalgo and McGuire.

The Saints would hang on to that lead until the eighth inning when Calumet St. Joseph posted two hits, was hit by a pitch and scored the tying run on a groundout.

Despite its 10 hits, the Saints only had two runners get as far as third base after the third inning.  The first time came with one out in the sixth inning, where a strikeout and groundout ended that insurance-run opportunity.  The second chance came in the 11th inning with that rally ending on a strikeout.

Notes: The contest was the longest of the season for the Saints from an innings perspective … USF is now 1-2 in extra-inning games … The two teams combined for 25 hits, all of which were singles and led to 20 total runners left on base … McGuire's four-hit game was the first by a Saint this season and the second one of his career … USF hosts Saints Xavier University in another CCAC season-series-deciding game on Wednesday at 3 pm.  The two teams split a doubleheader back on March 15.
