JOLIET, Ill. --- The University of St. Francis women's soccer continued its second-half-of-the-season surge Saturday night when the Fighting Saints earned their fourth win in a row and fifth in six matches with a 1-0 victory over Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference rival Roosevelt University at Joliet Memorial Stadium.
The win also extended USF's unbeaten streak to eight matches (5-0-3) and completed the climb to .500 with head coach
Al Palar's team now an even 5-5-5. In league play, the Saints are 5-1-3.
Kelly Flores delivered the game-winning goal with just 41 seconds remaining before halftime on a free kick from 50 yards out that was bobbled by Roosevelt goalkeeper Gaby Aguinaga-Hernandez before reaching the left corner of the net. It was Flores' second game-winning score in as many contests.
That was more than enough support for USF goalkeeper
Krystal Rodriguez, who became the program's career leader in shutouts with her 11th clean sheet in just short of two seasons. She stopped three shots on the night in recording her fourth blanking of the year.
USF's backline of
Claudia Hernandez,
Zoe Villont and
Emily Galvan also contributed to the shutout by allowing just the three shots on goal. That group has allowed no more than four shots on goal during the four-match winning streak.
The Saints outshot Roosevelt (4-8, 2-6) by a 23-13 count, including 9-3 on goal.
Notes: Flores has now scored in four straight matches as well as in each of the Saints' last five victories … Her second game-winning goal in as many outings came in similar fashion to that of Wednesday night, with less than one minute remaining before halftime and from 40-plus yards out … Flores tied
Isabel Diez for the team lead in goals with her fifth of the year on Saturday night, while also taking over the top spot in total points with 13 … Three of Rodriguez's four shutouts this season have come over the past four contests, where the Saints have outscored the opposition 11-1 … USF evened out its record in one-goal games at 2-2 with the win … The Saints are at St. Ambrose on Tuesday for a 6 pm conference showdown.
