Freshman Fun For Saints In 56-26 Victory Over Judson

JOLIET, Ill. --- Freshmen were the story of the day for the University of St. Francis football team on Saturday as all eight touchdowns scored in the 56-26 Mid-States Football Association Midwest League victory over Judson University came from underclassmen, including six by true freshmen.

Rookies Joey Tumilty and Carl Bew accounted for three and two scores, respectively, while redshirt freshman Gavin Day added two more touchdowns from his runningback spot.  USF's defense was not left out, either, with redshirt freshman linebacker Karsen Hansen recovering a blocked punt by Kemon Reese in the end zone just four plays into the contest.

Hansen's score followed by Tumilty's 16-yard touchdown just 82 seconds later sparked a 21-point first quarter and a 35-14 advantage at the break.  Tumilty's trip into the end zone was set up by a fumbled snap from center on Judson's second punt attempt and gave the Saints (5-2, 1-2 MSFA) a 14-0 lead after running just one offensive play.

Tumilty also registered a 10-yard scoring run in the second quarter and a two-yard touchdown reception from Bew in the fourth quarter.  It marked the first three-touchdown game of his collegiate career.

The first-year receiver finished his day with 137 all-purpose yards between his rushing (4 carries, 40 yards), receiving (4 catches, 33 yards), kick return (3 returns, 55 yards) and punt return numbers (1 return, 9 yards).

Bew, playing in place of the injured Sam Tumilty, directed six scoring drives of no less than seven plays and 52 yards on the afternoon, including one that covered 13 plays and 86 yards and the final one that went the distance of the field (99 yards) on nine plays.  He capped off eight-play scoring drives in the first and second quarters with six- and four-yard runs, propelling the Saints to their first 28 points of the game just under 18 minutes into the contest.

For the game, Bew ran for a season-high 170 yards on 24 carries with the two scores.  He also completed 10 of his 12 pass attempts for 155 yards with the one touchdown.

Day provided the other two scores on a seven-yard run in the third quarter and a 14-yard scamper in the fourth.  He finished with 37 yards on just six carries.

The 422-yard offensive day marked the second straight 400-plus yard effort for USF and the third of the season.  A total of 267 of those yards came on the ground as did six of the team's eight touchdowns.

Judson, which scored a season-high 26 points, finished with 342 yards between its 114 yards rushing and 223 yards passing.  The Eagles (0-6, 0-3) were led by Brandon Mackey's 127 yards on 13 carries and Aydan Edwards completing 20 of his 30 pass attempts for 222 yards with three touchdowns.  Grant Alexander was Edwards' favorite target, hauling in nine catches for 157 yards and two scores.

Matthew Perry led USF's defense with eight tackles.  Nick Mabutas was one behind with seven stops, while T.J. Neal had the only sack of the game and Jared King the lone fumble recovery of the contest on a day that included a persistent mist and 16-mile-per-hour winds until late in the game.

Notes: Reese's blocked punt was his second of the season and his second in as many attempts.  He also blocked the final punt of the Roosevelt game last Saturday to set up Brian Maday's 43-yard field goal … Speaking of Maday, he remained perfect on the season with his 30 straight PATs.  Including last year, he has made 33 PATs in a row … Maday also recovered his own onside kick in the second quarter to aid in the Saints scoring on each of their first four possessions, including the blocked punt … Both Bew's 100-plus yard rushing and passing games were his second in as many starts.  He also ran for 115 yards and passed for another 102 in his collegiate debut against Lawrence Technological University (Mich.) in Week 3 … Joey Tumilty took over the team lead from his brother, Sam Tumilty, in both touchdowns and scoring on Saturday.  He now has nine scores and 54 total points, or one more touchdown and six more points than Sam … The Saints scored in all four quarters of the contest, marking the second time this season that they have performed that feat … It was also USF's second-highest scoring effort of the campaign … St. Francis converted on nine of its 13 combined third- and fourth-down plays on Saturday, including going 2-for-2 on fourth down … The Saints were also a perfect 7-for-7 in the red zone with all seven attempts netting touchdowns … USF is on the road next Saturday to face St. Ambrose University in a 1 pm MSFA Midwest League kickoff.
