Saints Air It Out In Dominating Win Over St. Ambrose

DAVENPORT, Iowa --- Carl Bew passed for five touchdowns, Joey Tumilty recorded his second straight three-touchdown game and the University of St. Francis football team's defense registered two interception returns for touchdowns to put a damper on St. Ambrose University's homecoming celebration with a 55-0 Mid-States Football Association Midwest League victory Saturday afternoon.

Bew's scoring strikes went for 29, 68, 36, 14 and 34 yards en route to his first collegiate 300-yard passing day.  The true freshman needed just 13 completions in 21 attempts to total 311 yards with no interceptions.  He also led the team in rushing with 57 yards on 20 carries.

Each of USF's touchdown drives took no more than six plays with four of the five covering more than half the field.  Tumilty scored the only touchdown of the first half (29 yards) on a series that was extended by a roughing-the-kicker penalty.

St. Francis' other two first-half scores came on Brian Maday 19- and 24-yard field goals.  Those two scoring drives were actually the longest on the day in terms of plays (8 and 10), but two of the shortest in terms of distance (44 and 39).

The second half was a complete blowout with the Saints amassing 42 points in 30 minutes, bookended by Nick Franciskovich 30-yard and Matthew Perry 47-yard pick sixes.  In between, Bew tossed his other four touchdowns with St. Francis scoring on four of its five second-half possessions.

Dezzion Jordan accounted for the first offensive touchdown after the break with his 68-yard reception just three offensive plays after Franciskovich's interception return.  By day's end, Jordan would need only three receptions to collect a game-high 104 yards.

Tumilty also eclipsed the century mark with his 101 yards on four catches.  His other two scores went for 14 and 34 yards on USF's final two offensive series of the afternoon.

Daniel Goetsch provided the other touchdown on a 36-yard pass play.  He also had an 18-yard catch to finish with 54 yards.

Jake Friddle added two more catches and 43 yards to put Bew over the 300-yard mark.

All but 85 of USF's 396 yards came through the air, while St. Ambrose finished with 149 yards on three more plays than the Saints (62-59).  The Fighting Bees totaled just 63 yards on 37 carries and only 86 yards on 15-of-25 passing.

Kemon Reese had a big day defensively in leading the Saints' second shutout of the year with his season-high 18 tackles, including ten solos.  Pat Strocchia had a big afternoon, as well, with 2.5 sacks among his six tackles.  As a team, St. Francis registered four sacks.

USF also registered three interceptions on the day with a fourth one negated by an offsides penalty.  Jalen Cooper joined Franciskovich and Perry in that club with his team-best fourth pick of the year.

Notes: The contest marked the second straight game in which the Saints totaled at least 55 points and the third time this season that they reached that threshold.  Only the 2011 team had more games reach that scoring level with four … Maday had the highest scoring day of his St. Francis career with his 13 points culminating from another perfect afternoon of making all seven of his PATs and both of his field goals.  It was the fifth multi-field goal game of his career … With the touchdowns by Franciskovich and Perry, a member of USF's defensive unit has scored in two straight games and four times this season … Perry's pick was his third of the year … Reese's 18 stops were the most by any Saint this fall … The shutout by USF's defense marked the fourth time in school history that the Saints have produced multiple blankings in the same year.  The school record is three set in the program's second year of competition … USF's offense missed by just four yards of finishing with at least 400 yards of total offense for the third straight game and the fourth time this season … The Saints also came within one yard of being a perfect 5-for-5 on the day on scoring drives as they were stopped at the St. Ambrose one-yard line on their second drive of the third quarter … St. Ambrose finished the day with 149 yards of total offense, or just 12 yards more than they had penalty yardage (9-137) … The 149 yards allowed by the St. Francis defense was a season-best effort and marked the third time this year that the unit has held an opponent under 200 yards … USF wraps up the home portion of its season next Saturday when the Saints take on Olivet Nazarene University at 1 pm.  The rivalry is the oldest among all St. Francis opponents with this year's game being the 31st one in the all-time series.
