Saints Battle Back From Pair Of Deficits To Gain Tie With Goshen

GOSHEN, Ind. --- The University of St. Francis men's soccer team rallied from a pair of deficits to gain a 3-3 tie with Goshen College (Ind.) on Saturday as three different Saints provided goals and Carson Heglund tied a season high with his eight saves.

Goshen built a 2-0 lead in the match's first 21 minutes, including the initially tally just five minutes into the contest.  The Saints, however, came alive late in the opening half with back-to-back goals just three minutes apart to knot the score at two-all heading into the break.

Ander Santamarta started the rally with his first goal of the season at 39:20.  Santos Contreras tied the match exactly three minutes later on a penalty kick.

Up until the comeback, the Saints (2-1-1) had managed just two shots on goal.

Goshen (0-2-2) would regain the advantage in the 59th minute, but the Saints were quick to respond.  Just 44 seconds later, Sergio Fernandez-Arango had things tied up again after he connected with Diego Cortes.

Both teams had a few opportunities in the closing 30 minutes to break the second tie with three shots on goal for St. Francis and two for Goshen.  For the Saints, that amounted to half of their overall six shots on goal and part of their 11 shots for the match.  Goshen doubled that with 12 shots on goals and 23 total shots on the afternoon.

Of Heglund's eight saves, six came in the closing 45 minutes.

Notes: Contreras maintained the team lead with his fourth goal of the season.  Saturday's goal was his third on a penalty kick … Fernandez-Arango sits right behind after delivering his third goal of the year … Cortes' assist was his second of the campaign … Heglund also stopped eight stops in the previous match against Viterbo University (Wis.) … The Saints wrap up their season-long four-match road trip on Wednesday at Marian University, Ind. (4 pm).
