Saints Close Out Four-Game Road Trip With 3-1 Setback To Marian

INDIANAPOLIS --- Ander Santamarta scored for the second match in a row, but it was not enough for the University of St. Francis men's soccer team in a 3-1 setback to Marian University (Ind.) on Wednesday afternoon.  The loss dropped the Saints to 2-2-1 on the campaign.

USF had the advantage in scoring opportunities in both halves, including four shots on goal to just two for Marian (3-1-1) in the opening 45 minutes.  The Knights, however, were the only team to find the back of the net, delivering midway through the half.  The hosts then extended the lead to 2-0 just 75 seconds into the second half.

The Saints eventually got the deficit back to one when Santamarta scored on an unassisted goal at the 56:43 mark.  That, however, would be the second to last shot on goal for USF the rest of the way.  Marian, meanwhile, added an insurance tally just under three minutes after Santamarta's goal.  Jack Reynolds provided that score after delivering an assist on the game-winning goal earlier in the half.

USF's only other shot on goal came in the 80th minute, which was its seventh of the match.  Marian finished with five shots on goal.  Both teams took 13 total shots.

NOTES: Santamarta's goal was his second of the season after not scoring one year ago … Santamarta and Sergio Fernandez-Arango both attempted three shots with two being on goal … The contest closed out a season-high four-match road trip, where USF went 1-2-1 … The Saints take the next ten days off before opening Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference play on Sept. 17 on Busey Bank Field at Joliet Memorial Stadium against Indiana University Northwest.
