Diaz's First Collegiate Goal Keeps Saints' Record Perfect

HUNTINGTON, Ind. --- Azucena Diaz became the second freshman in three matches to register a game-winning goal for the University of St. Francis women's soccer team on Saturday afternoon, helping the Saints remain unbeaten at 3-0 with a 2-1 victory at Huntington University (Ind.).

Diaz joined Andrea Aguirre in the club with her first collegiate goal in the 72nd minute on a pass from Alexis Marroquin.  It came less than two minutes after Huntington (1-3) tied the contest at 1-1.

Aguirre's game-winning score came in the season opener against Goshen College (Aug. 23) by the same 2-1 count.

On Saturday, both teams had numerous opportunities to score in the contest, finishing with a combined 18 shots on goal.  It wasn't until Allison Schaar found the back of the net with just over two minutes remaining in the opening half, however, before either team could break the ice.  Schaar's goal came on an assist from Andrea Villa.

After coming up empty on each of its first six shots on goal, Huntington knotted the score at one-all at the 71:16 mark.  The Foresters, however, would produce just one more shot on goal the rest of the afternoon – at the 84:49 mark – enabling the Saints to keep their unblemished record intact.

Krystal Rodriguez registered her third victory in goal for USF, stopping a season-high seven shots in the process.

As a team, St. Francis outshot Huntington 12-10 with the majority of the attempts coming on goal.  USF produced 10 shots on goal to Huntington's eight.

Notes: The Saints have won each of their first three contests by identical 2-1 scores … With her first-half goal, Schaar has now scored a goal or provided an assist in each of her first three contests this season … Marroquin has also contributed to the scoring column in each of the three victories with one assist in each match … Villa's assist was her first as a Saint … Schaar accounted for nearly half of USF's shots with four on goal among her five total … Aguirre was the only other Saint with multiple attempts (2 on goal, 3 total) … USF closes out its season-long three-match road trip on Wednesday when the Saints go up against NAIA No. 7 preseason-ranked Marian University (Ind.).  The match is slated to start at 6 pm.
