Martinez's First Collegiate Goal Not Enough In 2-1 Setback To Governors State

CROWN POINT, Ind. --- William Martinez authored his first collegiate goal, but Governors State University responded with back-to-back tallies seven minutes apart to earn a 2-1 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference victory over the University of St. Francis men's soccer team Tuesday night.  The loss was the third straight for the Saints, who fell to 3-5-1 overall and 1-3 in league play.

Martinez broke a two-plus-match scoreless drought for St. Francis as well as a 0-0 deadlock in the contest with his shot from ten yards out on a pass from Sergio Fernandez-Arango in the 65th minute.  Just 130 seconds later, however, Governors State (4-3-4, 3-1-2 CCAC) got a free kick from Carlos Morales to knot the score at one-all.

The Jaguars then got their second goal on a high, arching shot from 30 yards out on the right side that sailed over the outstretched hands of backup goalkeeper Sebastian Mireles.  Pavel Valchev delivered the goal on an assist from Diego Camarena.

In the closing three minutes, the Saints had a pair of chances on goal to force a second tie, but were thwarted each time by GSU goalkeeper Emigdio Tormo Lopez, who finished with six saves on the night.

Mireles also registered six saves in place of the injured Carson Heglund, who made three saves in his 24 minutes of play as the starter.

Governors State outshot USF 29-9, but only 11-7 in shots on goal.

Notes: Mireles' appearance was his first of the season in goal for the Saints … Fernandez-Arango took over sole possession of the team lead in assists with his third on Tuesday night.  He also accounted for three of the team's nine total shots.  No other Saint took more than one … Martinez has now been a part of each of USF's last two scores after providing the assist on the team's last goal in a 3-0 victory over Indiana University Northwest back on Sept. 17 … The Saints are back home on Saturday when they host Calumet College of St. Joseph in a 3:30 pm CCAC matchup.
