JOLIET, Ill. ---
Sergio Fernandez-Arango and
William Martinez both recorded hat tricks for the University of St. Francis men's soccer team in a record-setting 12-2 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference performance over Calumet College of St. Joseph on Busey Bank Field at Joliet Memorial Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The previous USF record for most goals in a game was nine, set a pair of times, most recently against Lincoln Christian University in a shutout on Aug. 26, 2017. That was also the old mark for the widest margin of victory.
Fernandez-Arango needed just 10 minutes, 40 seconds to author his first collegiate three-goal game as he provided the Saints with each of their first three scores. He also assisted on USF's fourth and eighth tallies, all of which came in the opening half.
Martinez accounted for three of the four second-half goals, the last three on the day for St. Francis (4-5-1, 2-3 CCAC). USF's other offensive contributors were
Cameron Schroder with two goals and
Ander Santamarta,
Anthony Derka,
Santos Contreras and
Diego Hernandez with one goal each.
Besides Fernandez-Arango, St. Francis' other assists were recorded by
Diego Cortes (two),
Edward Luna,
Marco Calixto, Derka and Contreras.
Sebastian Mireles gained the start in goal, where he notched his first collegiate victory.Â
St. Francis managed 39 total shots on the day with 16 being on goal. Calumet St. Joseph (2-6-1, 1-5) mustered up just four shots with only two being on goal.
