Saints Drop Physical Battle With Holy Cross

JOLIET, Ill. --- Kevin Vidana's goal in the 67th minute for visiting Holy Cross College held up as the only score in a 1-0 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference victory over the University of St. Francis men's soccer team on Wednesday night at Joliet Memorial Stadium.

The loss was the first one in three contests at home for the Fighting Saints this fall.  It also put them back to even both overall (3-3-1) and in league play (1-1).

In a physical game that featured 36 fouls and seven yellow cards, both teams got plenty of shots off, but only had a limited amount on goal.  USF finished with 20 total shots, four of which were on goal, while Holy Cross took 18 and 5.

All four of the Fighting Saints' shots on goal came in the opening half when they had the wind to their backs.  Four of Holy Cross' five came in the closing 45 minutes.

St. Francis' best look came just three minutes prior to that of Vidana's goal, but Ander Santamarta's attempt off a corner kick sailed wide left.

Sergio Fernandez-Arango accounted for two of USF's other three shots on goal and seven shots overall.  Jesus Flores and Santos Contreras each took four shots.

Notes: USF's 20 total shots were its second-highest output of the season, while its four on goal were its second fewest … The shutout was just the second against the Saints in seven contests this year … St. Francis is on the road for each of its next two games starting with a 2:30 pm matchup against Roosevelt University in Arlington Heights on Saturday.
