FORT WAYNE, Ind. ---
Vivian Ventura and
Hailey Bartlaga both scored goals to help the University of St. Francis women's soccer team open its season-long three-match road trip with a 2-1 victory over University of Saint Francis (Ind.) on Saturday afternoon.
Ventura authored her first collegiate goal just 12 minutes into the non-conference contest on an assist from
Andrea Aguirre. The Saints (2-0) then added what proved to be the game-winning goal at 27:28 when Bartlaga connected with
Allison Schaar for a 2-0 St. Francis lead.
Saint Francis (1-1) cut the deficit in half 14 minutes into the second half, but after that St. Francis' defense put a stop to any further threats of scoring by the Cougars. The hosts would manage just two shots the rest of the match with only one more being on goal.
The Saints, meanwhile, put up seven shots with two being on goal in the closing 31 minutes. For the game, USF held a 12-7 advantage in total shots and a 6-4 edge in shots on goal.
Krystal Rodriguez gained her second win in goal by producing a three-save afternoon.
Notes: Both Aguirre and Schaar have now contributed to USF's scoring in each of its first two contests. In the Saints' home opener on Tuesday, Aguirre had a goal and an assist with Schaar providing one goal … Bartlaga's goal was her first of the season and second as a Saint …
Abbey Janeczek made her Saints' debut on Saturday, getting the starting nod on defense ... The Saints have the whole week off before traveling to Huntington University (Ind.) next Saturday afternoon (Sept. 3) for a 12:30 pm match.
