LA CROSSE, Wis. --- Viterbo University continued its early-season defensive dominance on Sunday when the University of St. Francis men's soccer team became the latest shutout victim in a 4-0 defeat at the hands of the V-Hawks to close out Viterbo's own two-day tournament. The hosts have not allowed a goal through the first four games of the season after Sunday's victory and have outscored their opponents 14-0 to start 2022.
On Sunday, the only goal Viterbo needed was the one that came just 8:19 into the contest by Alfie Gyurkovits off a pair of passes. By halftime, the V-Hawks had built the advantage to 3-0 with the other scores coming in the 20th and 33rd minutes.
Viterbo would add one more tally in the 71st minute to close out the scoring.
The Saints, who suffered their first defeat of the season after winning their first two matches, were held to just two shots on goal. The first one came from
Sergio Fernandez-Arango just four minutes after Viterbo's first score. The latter one also came shortly after a Viterbo goal off the foot of
Erick Guzman in the 73rd minute.
Viterbo countered with 12 shots on goal and 16 total shots. USF put up ten total shots.
Ernesto Ascenzo registered his fourth shutout of the season for the winners, while
Carson Heglund stopped eight shots on goal for the Saints.
Notes: Heglund's eight saves were a season high … Fernandez-Arango and
Anthony Derka were the only two Saints to record multiple shots. They each took two … USF continues its season-long four-match road trip next Saturday when it heads to Goshen College (Ind.) for a 4 pm contest.
