McDermott, Vachon Toss Shutouts At Indiana South Bend

SOUTH BEND, Ind. --- Indiana University South Bend had a runner get as far as third base just one time on the day as Bridget McDermott and Hannah Vachon each tossed shutouts for the University of St. Francis softball team on Tuesday afternoon. McDermott started it with her 2-0 victory before Vachon repeated the feat in a 3-0 contest.

Kaylie Sippel was near perfect on the offensive side, as well, going 6 for 7 with one RBI and a run scored.

Game 1: USF 2, Indiana South Bend 0
The Saints (24-12, 14-6 CCAC) took advantage of Indiana South Bend's wildness in the second inning to score the only run they would need in the contest. Two walks, a single, and a hit batsmen forced home the first run when Kenna Kleinert walked with the bases loaded.

USF added its second run on a Madisen Tucker single in the third inning.

Indiana South Bend had an opportunity to tie the contest in the fifth inning when it had a pair of runners in scoring position and only one out. McDermott, however, was able to get out of the jam with a strikeout and a groundout. She allowed just four hits in the contest, while striking out two batters in recording her fifth shutout of the season and her 14th win against only three defeats.

Sippel went 3 for 3 in Game 1 with Tucker adding a pair of hits.

Game 2: USF 3, Indiana South Bend 0
The Saints again built an early lead, this time in the first inning on the first of three hits from Sippel in Game 2. Their other two runs came on a Gracyn Gabriel sacrifice fly and a Brittany Osborne single in the fourth inning. It was one of two hits in the contest for the latter.

That was more than enough for Vachon, who notched her second shutout of the campaign. She scattered five hits and two walks against three strikeouts in improving to 7-6 on the season.
