CHICAGO --- The winning ways continued for
Nick Villasenor and the University of St. Francis baseball team. Villasenor produced his third straight quality start and the Saints made it six wins in a row with their 5-2 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference victory over Roosevelt University on Friday afternoon at Duly Health and Care Field.
After a shaky first inning in which he yielded Roosevelt's two runs on two hits, two walks and a wild pitch, Villasenor (3-3) got on track allowing only three more hits and one walk, while striking out eight batters over his final seven innings of work. He finished with nine strikeouts total against five hits and three walks and just missed out on his third complete game in a row by one inning.
Luke Ketchum (2-for-3) keyed the comeback for the Saints (13-18, 9-3 CCAC). He had a one out single in the second inning and scored USF's first run on a
Jake Vera bunt single down the third base line. One inning later, Ketchum put the Saints up 3-2 with a two out, two run double down the left field line.
Scott Tumilty added an insurance run in the fifth inning with his single up the middle and
John McGuire did the same in the eighth inning with his sacrifice fly. All but McGuire's RBI came with two outs.
Eric Maffie extended his hitting streak to seven games with his sixth straight multi hit game. He went 3 for 4 with one run scored. The senior first baseman also set up the Saints' fourth run with his sacrifice bunt.
Vera provided three hits, as well, and scored the game's final run, while McGuire authored a hit for the tenth game in a row.
Sam Pileggi closed things out with one inning of scoreless relief to notch his second save of the season.
