Saints Rally Twice, But Fall In Twinbill Versus Roosevelt

CRESTWOOD, Ill. --- The University of St. Francis baseball team rallied in both ends of its Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader with Roosevelt University, but was unable to keep its winning streak alive, dropping 6-3 and 6-5 contests on Saturday night.

The Saints (13-20, 9-5 CCAC) fell behind 4-0 in the opener before pulling to within 4-3 in the sixth inning. In the nightcap, USF put together a four run ninth inning to force extra innings before Roosevelt won it with a run in the tenth inning.

Individually, John McGuire and Eric Maffie extended their personal streaks. McGuire recorded at least one hit and two runs batted in in both games to extend his hitting streak to a team best 12 games. Maffie (4-for-8 on the night) has hit safely in nine straight games now, the last eight of which he has produced multiple hits.

Game 1: Roosevelt 6, USF 3
The Saints had their chances to extend their six game winning streak, but left 13 runners on base including leaving the bases loaded in two of the seven innings.

Roosevelt scored three times in the opening inning and made it a 4-0 game after two innings before the Saints tallied single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth frames to make it a 4-3 contest. The Lakers added two more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to snap USF's season high winning streak.

McGuire drove in two of the Saints' runs, while Maffie, Gio Pappas and Jake Vera all supplied a pair of hits.

Game 2: Roosevelt 6, USF 5 --- 10 Innings
An error to begin the ninth inning opened the door for the Saints, who took full advantage, scoring four times to force extra innings. McGuire tripled home two runs with Maffie's single tying the contest at five all. USF's other run came home on a wild pitch.

A one out triple from Daniel Gutierrez (4-for-6) and a hit batsmen after two intentional walks enabled Roosevelt to prevail in the tenth inning. The Lakers had built an initial 3-0 lead after four innings. USF's first run came in the sixth inning, which was offset by single runs from the Lakers in the sixth and seventh innings to go up 5-1.

After producing 11 hits in the opener, the Saints put up 13 more in the nightcap with Jake LaSota's 3 for 3 game leading the way. McGuire and Maffie provided two hits each.
