Home Win Streak Snapped At 19 Games

JOLIET, Ill. --- The University of St. Francis women's basketball team went 642 days without suffering a loss at the Sullivan Center, but a season-low .348 shooting mark from the field ended that extended run of 19 straight victories at home Wednesday night when Indiana University Northwest dealt the NAIA No. 23-ranked Fighting Saints a 75-60 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference setback.

Four RedHawk starters scored in double figures with two authoring double-doubles to also snap USF's six-game overall winning streak.  Tiara Jackson led the way with 18 points and 12 rebounds, both of which were team highs.  Karli Miller collected the other double-double with her 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Sarah Martin totaled 17 points.

Jordan Pyle was the top player for the Saints in points (20), rebounds (eight) and steals (six).  Hannah Swiatek was the only other USF player to score in double figures, finishing with 12 points.  Jorja Bolton and Braxtin Mickens each contributed nine points.

Usually a fast starter, the Saints (7-2, 4-1 CCAC) got behind 15-4 at the halfway mark of the opening quarter, but regrouped to score 14 of the final 16 points of the frame to gain a slight 18-17 edge at the stop.  A 50 percent shooting clip (8-of-16) in the period sparked the rally.

That, however, would be the only quarter in which head coach John McGinty's club would shoot well.  The final three quarters saw just a .302 shooting percentage with only 16 baskets in 53 attempts.  At the same time, Indiana Northwest (7-1, 4-0) was converting at just under a 50 percent clip (19-of-40).

The start of the third quarter is what really put the Saints in a difficult spot.  After neither team scored in the first three minutes, Indiana Northwest went on a 12-0 run over the next four minutes to take its biggest lead of the game at 47-32.  During the dryspell, USF went 0-for-9 from the field with four turnovers en route to being outscored 21-10 in the quarter.

Trailing 56-42 entering the fourth quarter, the Saints would get as close as 65-59 on a Mickens three-pointer with 2:01 left in the contest, but USF did not get another basket the rest of the way allowing Indiana Northwest to close out the contest on a 10-1 run.

Besides shooting under 35 percent overall (24-of-69), the Saints were just 8-of-32 from three-point range (25 pct.) and 4-of-7 at the foul line (57.1 pct.).  Indiana Northwest's conversion rates were 46.3 percent overall (25-of-54), 42.9 percent from beyond the arc (9-of-21) and 16-of-22 at the free throw line (72.7 pct.).  The latter also out-rebounded USF 45-31.

Notes: USF's last loss at the Sullivan Center came against Olivet Nazarene University in the semifinal round of the 2021 CCAC Tournament back on Feb. 27, 2021 … Pyle's 20 points were a season high … Bolton was the lone USF player to record multiple three-pointers, finishing with three … St. Francis led for less than four minutes on the night with its biggest lead being four points and its last lead coming to an end at the 6:48 mark of the second quarter … The Saints play their only home game in the month of December on Friday when they host Great Lakes Christian College (Mich.) at 7 pm.
