JOLIET, Ill. --- The University of St. Francis football team used season-high numbers in virtually every offensive category on Saturday afternoon to extend its winning streak to three games with a 39-7 Mid-States Football Association Midwest League victory over Trinity International University on the turf of Busey Bank Field at Joliet Memorial Stadium.
The Saints (3-2, 2-0 MSFA) rang up 467 yards of total offense, eclipsing their previous season-high mark by 144 yards. The numbers for rushing (165 yards), passing (302), completions (19) and rushing touchdowns (4) all led to a season-best 39 points on the scoreboard.
For the second week in a row, St. Francis put points on the board on its opening drive.Â
Sam Tumilty capped off an 11-play, 56-yard march with his sixth rushing touchdown of the season. The series was set up by
Scott Tumilty's 36-yard opening kickoff return.
The Saints would go on to add 17 points in the second quarter with two more one-yard scores from
Keenan Hailey and
James Zilinger and a 42-yard field goal by
Brian Maday to send USF into the break leading 25-0.Â
De'Whon Gavin's 45-yard reception set up Hailey's score, while Zilinger accounted for 18 of USF's 37 yards on the second score. That came after St. Francis' defense stopped Trinity International on fourth-and-one in its own territory. Â
The field goal as time expired came after
Jake Friddle recovered a TIU fumble on a punt return.
The Saints added their final two scores on the first two drives of the second half with the first touchdown coming on the first play of scrimmage after the break.Â
Sam Tumilty connected with
Dezzion Jordan on a 64-yard strike that Jordan initially bobbled before reaching back and pulling it in off his helmet for his first collegiate touchdown. He totaled a team-high 100 yards on five catches.
Gavin again had the big play on USF's next touchdown when he opened the nine-play, 80-yard drive with a 31-yard reception. He would finish the afternoon with three receptions for 76 yards.Â
Sam Tumilty ended the drive and St. Francis' scoring with his second one-yard touchdown of the day.
Tumilty's day was big through the air. He completed 16 of his 25 attempts for 259 yards with the one touchdown. On the ground, he gained 47 yards on 18 carries.
Besides Jordan and Gavin,
Liam Eldridge totaled five receptions for 62 yards.
USF's first shutout bid of the season was ruined in the fourth quarter when Cameron Jones (5 catches, 157 yards) hauled in a 65-yard pass for a touchdown. For the game, Trinity International was held to 228 yards of offense, including just 45 yards rushing on 28 carries.
Leading USF's defensive effort were linemen
Michael R. Johnson and
Pat Strocchia. Each player recorded six tackles with Strocchia in on 1.5 sacks and another tackle for loss. Johnson also landed a sack of nine yards.
Notes: Jordan's 100-yard performance was the first of his career … Seven different Saints recorded rushes, including Maday, the punter, on a 12-yard fake … Hailey and Zilinger became the first two Saints besides
Sam Tumilty to rush for a touchdown this season. Tumilty had the first six of the year before Hailey's second-quarter score. With his two on Saturday, Tumilty now has seven of the nine rushing touchdowns … USF's 26 first downs were split up evenly between rushing (13) and passing (13) … The Saints were a perfect 4-for-4 in the red zone with all four scores resulting in touchdowns …
Angel Mata picked off his third pass of the season on Saturday to grab a share of the team lead with
Nick Mabutas … Head coach
Joe Curry's team heads to Streamwood, Ill. next Saturday to face Judson University in a MSFA matchup at Streamwood High School. Â Â Â Â
