Saints Cruise To Fourth Straight Win With Run of 45 Unanswered Points

STREAMWOOD, Ill. --- After spotting Judson University an 8-0 lead, the University of St. Francis football team scored 45 unanswered points to coast to its fourth straight victory in a 45-16 Mid-States Football Association Midwest League decision Saturday afternoon at Millennium Stadium on the campus of Streamwood High School.

All 45 of USF's points came between the second and third quarters with 28 resulting from Judson turnovers.  Michael R. Johnson set up the first two St. Francis touchdowns with a pair of caused fumbles, while two of the team's three interceptions netted another 14 points.

Besides setting up 28 of the team's 45 points, USF's defense also held Brandon Mackey, the nation's second-leading rusher, to just 62 yards on 18 carries.  He came in averaging 149.8 yards per contest.  For the game, the nation's 15th-leading rushing offense was limited to only 89 yards on 29 carries.

Six different Saints scored on the day, including three that tallied their first collegiate touchdowns.  Those honors went to De'Whon Gavin (14-yard reception), Alessio Battaglia (15-yard catch) and Daniel McLaurin (3-yard run).

Sam Tumilty added to his team-leading rushing touchdown numbers with his sixth and seventh of the season on 12- and one-yard runs.  Keenan Hailey provided the other touchdown on an eight-yard pass play.

Brian Maday netted the other nine USF points, being perfect on the day with his six PATs and a 25-yard field goal to give the Saints a 24-8 lead at the break.

Judson's only touchdown besides a 68-yard interception return for a score to open the game came late in the third quarter on a 5-play, 87-yard drive just after USF's final touchdown of the afternoon.  There was no scoring from either team in the final 18 minutes.

The St. Francis offense produced its second straight game of 460-plus yards, leading to its highest scoring output of the season.  Tumilty had a big game both on the ground and through the air.  He landed his second 100-yard rushing performance of the season with his season-high 128 yards on 25 carries.

In the air, he threw for 226 yards, completing 12-of-21 passes with three going for touchdowns.  Five different Saints caught at least two passes: Kemond Cohran (3 for 70 yards), Jason Hartsfield (2-58), Gavin (2-49), Battaglia (2-25) and Hailey (3-19).

Hailey also had his most productive rushing afternoon as a Saint with his 15 carries going for 80 yards.  That helped the Saints net a season-high 231 yards on the ground, or just 20 yards less than Judson's total offensive output on the day.

Nick Mabutas led USF's defense with five stops.  Johnson had two of his four tackles go for loss, including one sack, to go along with his two caused fumbles and one recovery.

Terrance Nicholson, Jalen Cooper and Angel Mata had the interceptions for the Saints, who had a season-high five takeaways on the afternoon.

After starting out the season 0-2, the Saints are now 4-2 overall and a perfect 3-0 in league play.

Notes: The Saints scored on each of their seven red-zone opportunities with six netting touchdowns … Judson went 0-for-12 on third-down plays and just 1-for-15 on third- and fourth- down plays combined … Five of USF's seven scoring drives required less than 44 yards to be completed … During its four-game winning streak, St. Francis has re-set its season-high point production each time … Mata's fourth interception of the campaign equaled his season high set one year ago … Johnson extended his string of recording at least one-half sack to four straight games … Maday remained perfect on PATs for the season (19-for-19), while delivering his third field goal of the year … The Saints are back home next Saturday when they host St. Ambrose University in a league affair beginning at 1 pm.
