JOLIET, Ill. --- A spirited crowd on PINK OUT Night rallied the University of St. Francis women's volleyball team to a 14-25, 25-20, 25-23, 25-23 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference victory over Olivet Nazarene University at the Sullivan Center Tuesday night.
After dropping the opening set by a double-digit margin, the Saints (18-15, 9-4) looked to be on the verge of having their season-high five-match losing streak extended. Instead, multiple Saints stepped up to gain the season sweep of Olivet Nazarene in a match that had 34 ties and 21 lead changes after all was settled.
Defensively is where the Saints excelled with 12 blocks on the night as five different USF players were a part of at least three blocks.Â
Cadence Wodrich (five assist blocks) and
Stephanie Woods (two solo, three assist blocks) led the way with
Taylor Connolly adding one solo and three assist blocks.
Connolly also was a big factor on the offensive end with her seven kills, including three clutch ones in the third set.Â
Gabriela Oliveira also played an important role on both ends of the court with her team-high 10 kills and nine digs as did
Desiree Anderson (8 kills, team-high 10 digs).
Hannah Pacheco and
Kaylie Sippel directed the offense with 15 and 14 assists, respectively.
Olivet Nazarene (7-17, 6-7) used a 17-3 surge to run away with the first set. In the second set, the Saints produced a late 5-1 burst to even the match at one game apiece.
In the third set, head coach
Cara Currier's team had two big rallies to go ahead. Trailing 15-11 the first time, a pair of kills from Anderson and Connolly sparked a run of seven straight points. Olivet Nazarene was quick to respond with its own 6-0 run to go up 22-19 only to have the Saints close the match on a 6-1 run with four different players providing kills at the end.
If that wasn't enough, 15 ties and 10 lead changes made up the fourth set before the Saints wrapped up the win with four of the final five points.
Notes: With the win, the Saints locked up a spot in the CCAC Tournament … USF is on the road Thursday to face Governors State University at 7 pm.
