Bartlaga Delivers Game-Winner In Closing Minute To Upset Trinity Christian

JOLIET, Ill. --- Hailey Bartlaga scored her third game-winning goal of the season with just 48 seconds remaining in regulation and the University of St. Francis women's soccer team notched its first ten-win season since 2015 with its 2-1 victory over Trinity Christian College on Saturday afternoon at Joliet Memorial Stadium.

Trinity Christian (7-4-4, 6-2-2 CCAC) entered the match in second place in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference standings and took a 1-0 lead 23 minutes into the contest.  But the Saints (10-4-1, 6-3-1) pounced on a pair of loose balls in the closing 20 minutes to rally for the victory.

Mia Ocana delivered the tying goal at 71:42 after Alexis Marroquin and Trinity Christian goalkeeper Michelle Urribarri got tied up and the ball came free.  Ocana was there and delivered the ball into the right side of the net.

Eighteen minutes later, Bartlaga was at the right place at the right time in front of the net.  She ended a pinball flurry with her ball rolling over the goal line just ahead of Urribarri, who tried to run it down.

The Saints, however, could not celebrate until the final six seconds when Krystal Rodriguez stopped a shot at close range to seal the win.  The save was her season-high tenth of the afternoon and sixth of the second half.

Both teams finished virtually even in all offensive statistical categories.  They both had three corner kicks and Trinity Christian took just one more shot overall than the Saints, 17-16.  The Trolls did, however, have 11 shots on goal to USF's seven.

Notes: Entering the contest, the Saints had not scored against Trinity Christian in their four previous meetings.  Their last goal against the Trolls came in a 2-1 overtime setback in 2017 … The win also snapped a seven-match losing streak against TCC.  USF's last victory against the Trolls came on Nov. 8, 2014 ... Bartlaga entered the week having scored just one goal on the season.  In two games this week, she had three to move into second place on the team in total goals with four … Bartlaga also authored both game-winning goals this week.  Her other one this season came against Saint Francis, Ind. (Aug. 27) … The 2-1 decision was the Saints' seventh of the year with head coach Al Palar's team coming out on top five times … The contest was also the eighth decided by one goal this year, where USF is now 5-3 … Ocana's goal was her third of the year.  She ranks second on the team in points with 11 … Rodriguez maintained her top two spots in the conference with her .844 save percentage (tops in the league) and 0.94 goals-against average (second) … Rodriguez's previous high stop total was seven saves set twice early in the year … The Saints have the whole week off before returning to action next Saturday night at 5 pm when they square off against Saint Xavier University at Joliet Memorial Stadium.  Both teams currently sit tied for fifth place in the league standings with 19 points each.
