JOLIET, Ill. ---
Edward Luna authored the first multi-goal game of his collegiate career,
Carson Heglund recorded his third shutout of the season and the University of St. Francis men's soccer team got back even both overall and in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference play with its 3-0 victory over Trinity Christian College on the turf of Busey Bank Field at Joliet Memorial on Saturday afternoon.
Luna delivered both of his goals in the second half after
William Martinez provided the only scoring of the opening 45 minutes. Martinez tapped in a shot off the right post by
Anthony Derka with just over three minutes remaining before the break.
An attentive Luna intercepted a Trinity Christian pass seven minutes into the second half and his shot from 25 yards out ricocheted off a TCC player before finding the back of the net. His second goal came from nearly the identical spot with his liner finding the upper left side of the net.
Jesus Flores provided the assist on the final goal, which came with just one minute to play in the contest.
Heglund stopped seven shots in goal on the afternoon to improve to 5-4-2 on the season.
USF outshot Trinity Christian 23-11, including 12-7 on goal.
For the Saints, they returned to the .500 mark at 6-6-2 overall and 4-4-1 in league play. It also moved them into a three-way tie for sixth place in the conference standings. The top eight teams advance to the CCAC Tournament next month.
Notes: USF's three-game unbeaten streak is its longest of the season … Heglund's seven stops were his second most of the campaign … Martinez's goal was his second in as many contests and all six of his goals this season have come in the last six games … Martinez also registered the game-winning goal on Saturday, his second of the fall … Luna's goals were his second and third of the season … Flores' assist was his first of the year … The Saints return to action next Saturday when they host Saint Xavier University at 7:30 pm.
