Saints' Playoff Chances Take Hit WIth 1-0 Setback To Saint Xavier

JOLIET, Ill. --- The University of St. Francis men's soccer team's bid for a spot in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Postseason Tournament took a hit on Saturday night when the Fighting Saints dropped a 1-0 decision to Saint Xavier University on the pitch of Busey Bank Field at Joliet Memorial Stadium.

Pablo Guerrero's first goal of the season in the 19th minute held up as the game-winner for Saint Xavier, which moved into a tie for eighth place with the Saints with the victory.  Both teams have 13 points with two matches to go.

Saint Xavier (5-8-2, 4-5-1) currently holds the upper hand for the eighth and final spot in the tournament by virtue of its head-to-head competition with USF (6-7-2, 4-5-1).

Both teams play Cardinal Stritch University and Judson University to close out the regular season next week.  St. Ambrose University with 11 points is also in the mix for the last playoff spot.  The Fighting Bees, however, have only one game left.  They host Governors State University on Tuesday.

The Saints outshot Saint Xavier both overall (18-15) and in attempts on goal (7-5), but did not get too many good looks at the goal.  Leonardo Haro had a pair of header attempts in the second half that comprised USF's best chances at tying the contest.  The first one came in a three-minute stretch where the Saints had three shots on goal.  The second one came with less than four minutes to play.

Andres Zamora registered his fifth shutout of the season with the seven saves, while Carson Heglund totaled four saves for USF.

Notes: Six of USF's seven shots on goal came from Haro, Ander Santamarta and Sergio Fernandez-Arango, all of whom had two attempts … Each of St. Francis' last five setbacks have come by one goal, including three 1-0 decisions … The contest marked the fourth time this season that the Saints have ben shutout … St. Francis closes out the home portion of its regular season on Tuesday when it hosts Judson at 7 pm.
