Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Corona's Goal Makes It Three Straight For USF Women

JOLIET, Ill. --- Looking to continue the hot start to its season, the University of St. Francis women's soccer team took to the field for the first full home game of the season on Tuesday night against the Saint Francis (Ind.) Cougars. USF dominated the possession for a majority of the match and came away with a 1-0 victory behind the 82nd-minute goal by Litzy Corona

Turning Point

  • With eight minutes to go, a yellow card issued to the Cougars set up the Saints with a free kick. Corona ripped the kick from 37 yards out and was able to guide it past the Cougars' keeper to give USF the 1-0 lead.

How it happened
  • USF came out with a lot of energy to begin the match, ripping off four shots in the first 15 minutes.

  • In total, the Saints took 14 shots to just one for the Cougars in the first 45 minutes. Saint Francis (Ind.) keeper Melanie Xouris made five tough saves in the half.

  • Yadira Estrada had to make just two saves on the night, both coming in the second half. The toughest came midway through the second half on a point-blank shot with multiple players around her to keep the score 0-0.

  • The Saints broke the scoreless tie in the 82nd minute. Corona took advantage of a Cougars yellow card that set her up from 37 yards out. She then launched an arching ball that found its way to the back of the net for her second goal of the season, which made it 1-0 USF.

  • Estrada moved to 3-0 in net for USF.

  • The shutout was the third straight for the Saints. The last time that feat was accomplished was during the 2012 season.

  • The 3-0 start for USF is the best since the 2013 season when the Saints started 5-0.

Up next

  • The Saints will be back in action on Tuesday, September 14, when Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) play opens.
