Three Goals In Ten Minutes Pushes USF Past Governors State

JOLIET, Ill. --- Picking up their first home win of the season, the University of St. Francis men's soccer team defeated the Governors State Jaguars in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference play on Wednesday night by a score of 3-2. The difference in the match was a ten-minute stretch when USF netted three goals. The Saints then were able to hold off the Jaguars late to secure the win.

Turning Point

  • The goal that proved to be the difference came in the 37th minute. Sergio Fernandez-Arango played a pass across the field into space for Pablo Rubio Guerra who used his right foot to find the back of the net for the first time in his collegiate career.

How it Happened

  • The Saints struck first in the 27th minute. Hunter Fuss played a high arching ball forward that took a big hop on the ATI Field turf. Fernandez-Arango was able to finish the first goal of the match on the left side of the net.

  • USF extended their lead to 2-0 in the 34th minute. It was Fernandez-Arango again, this time the forward dribbled through four Jaguar defenders and won a one-on-one with the keeper for his fourth goal of the season.

  • The USF lead grew to 3-0 in the 37th minute. Fernandez-Arango led Guerra with a perfect pass across the field. Guerra was able to find enough space to finish off his first collegiate goal inside the right post with his right foot.

  • Carson Heglund made a tough save in the 63rd minute to keep the USF lead at three early in the second half.

  • Governors State cut into the USF lead in the 78th minute when Martin Esquivel was able to head the ball in off of a corner kick.

  • The Jaguars then made it 3-2 just over a minute later on a Hamzat Sanni penalty kick.

  • Heglund again came up big for USF with a save off of a header in the 87th minute.

  • In total, Heglund made six saves on the night.
