Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Saints Fall To Mount Mercy in Home Opener

JOLIET, Ill.--- Looking to bounce back after a loss to open the 2021 season, the University of St. Francis men's soccer program took to the field on Thursday evening for the home opener. Mount Mercy spoiled the day for St. Francis, getting a second-minute goal from Yu Sasaki which proved to be the game-winner in a 2-0 win over USF.

 Turning point

  • Just 1:34 into the game Oguzhan Bozkan fed a cross through the box and Sasaki was able to guide it off of his body for what proved to be the game-winning goal.

How it happened

The game started quickly between the two sides. Mount Mercy grabbed the early lead when Bozkan guided a cross that was let through by Jonah Dancer and finished off by Sasaki. Zakhar Shkidchenko came close to netting an equalizer in the 23rd minute, but the Mustang goalie Lucca Munhoz kept the Saints off the board.

USF fought to find the equalizing goal, coming close again in the 81st minute off the foot of Dominik Barwiolek. Mount Mercy added a second goal in the 87th minute when Thomas Bean finished off a pass from Sasaki to make it 2-0.

Up next

  • The Saints will conclude the busy three-match opening week on Saturday afternoon when they welcome Goshen College to Joliet Memorial Stadium for a 3:00 pm kickoff.
