Saints Drop Season Opener at Taylor

UPLAND, Ind. --- Host Taylor University (Ind.) used a pair of goals each from Luke Holwerda and Andrew Siegelin to defeat the University of St. Francis men's soccer team 4-0 in the season opener for both squads on Tuesday night.

Turning point

  • Taylor forced a USF turnover near midfield and Holwerda dribbled it into the box and finished what proved to be the game winning goal just inside the left post.

How it happened

The Trojans split their four goals evenly over the two halves with both Holwerda and Siegelin scoring in each 45-minute period. Siegelin also assisted on Holwerda's second goal, which came with just 18 seconds to play in the contest.

The other three tallies were bunched together in a 12-minute span starting at the 35-minute mark and concluding at the 47-minute mark.

Both teams were limited to single digits in total shots on goal with Taylor edging out the Saints, 7-6.  In total shots, the Trojans held a 13-11 advantage.

Zakhar Shkidchenko (SR/Kiev, Ukraine) was the lone Saint to author multiple shots on goal, totaling two of the six.

Jacob Susad accounted for all six saves for the Trojans to register the shutout.

The Saints make their home debut on Thursday hosting Mount Mercy University (Iowa) in a 7 pm match at ATI Field at Joliet Memorial Stadium.
